The Stephen Nadal Memorial Scholarship has been
established by the Seattle APALA Chapter for the 2008-09
academic year.  Through the affiliation with Dollars for Scholars,
a program of ScholarshipAmerica, our Chapter became eligible
for a $1,000 matching grant based on the initial funds raised to
honor the activist, colleague and friend who passed away
suddenly from a massive heart attack due to genetic heart
disease at the age of 35.

Stephen’s contribution to the Asian Pacific Islander community
reached and bridged the mile between the young and the
seasoned activists; by strengthening the ties of understanding
and increasing activism within the API community, people took
pride in their civic duties.  Stephen’s enthusiasm and infectious
smile drew people to the phone bank, to doorbelling and
leafleting throughout neighborhoods for GOTV.   His leadership
skills brought community members and labor unionists together
to envision coalition –building, equity, social justice and hope.

This scholarship will be awarded to the individual who holds with
high esteem and demonstrates the principles of the Labor
Movement where all workers have a voice in the conditions of
their employment and a voice in protecting immigrant rights as
well as a voice in civil rights.
